MaD 2015 Free Market
Market, Outdoor Cinema & Sharing in All Possible Forms

Free: unrestricted, free of charge

The word “free” and the word “friend” share the same root – the ancient word meaning “to love”. In ancient Europe where the society was based on the slavery/feudal system, only those who were not slaves were free. Only when two people are not master and slave, or when they are not trying to use each other, that they can become true friends freely.

What is the relationship between people like in the modern society, one that is ruled by market forces? How do we understand the same word of “free”? In the age of neoliberalism, let us not forget the origin of freedom and the time when the market, in the form of a fair, was a place where people got together not only to trade goods, but to share cakes and jams, enjoy public entertainment, chat and gossip, and build friendships. At the Free Market, “villagers” of MaD 2015 from all over Asia, together with local arts and cultural practitioners, will build a pop-up market for free sharing of ideas and goods!
