Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage - Exhibition on Craftsmanship of Lantern Making

Unicorn is one of the four great auspicious animals in China. In legend, it is a symbol of prosperity or serenity which can help to dissolve and eliminate evil spirits.Unicorn Dance in festival events is thought to be a celestial blessing of peace, luck, protection, success, and longevity to the people. To celebrate Lunar New Year, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum has invited local masters to construct three sets of Unicorn dancing figures of different regional style (namely Hakka, Dongguan and Hailufeng) with traditional paper crafting techniques. In the middle, there will be a three-layer lantern made from bamboo strip. The lantern is in hexagonal shape and is about three meters high. The whole piece of work will be displayed at the Urban Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival site, wishing good luck and fortune to every visitor.
