A truth Encounter of Love

This is a love letter from Mabel and Alex to Hong Kong after “An Autumn's Tale” and “Echoes of the Rainbow”, and it is based on the heartbreaking true story of Jackie Chan’s parents in the swinging 40~ 50’s. Love, never be easy to grasp. A token of love, a love song, a promise, those are the things which trigger the reciprocal sweet and bitter of love. Fang, the spy has coincidently encountered a widow, Chen, they started their love story via Anhui to Hong Kong. In Anhui, they fell in love, and separation happened in Shanghai, both of them asserted their vow: would wait for each other in Hong Kong. 

Mabel said, it’s based on the truth love story in the generation of our parents or grand-parents. It is the fact the Chinese must experience in turbulent era. This is not the story of that couple, but the story of all Chinese lived in that period. It’s touching. We are blissful and fortunate. We not need to experience war and the difficulties from war. Produced this film would brought us to that space and time, to feel, to experience the harsh life, along with understanding the history of Chinese and the hardness of our parents. She hope she could bring out the emotion, love, diligent of our parent generation, may be this is regard as collective memory.

Alex Law said he had heard many events, stories of his previous generation or siblings, such as his parents, seniorities, their experiences are stirring my emotion; and then, he put all this fragments of memories to piece up together. Put all things into Fang and Chen, to composite their story. “A Tale of Three Cities” is a very touching love story. They are telling joy and sorrow, encounter and separation; may be, it is the story that your parents never tell you before. However, all of the stories is true.

Synopsis

Based on a true story, The Tale of Three Cities is a period drama war film co-directed by award-winning co-directors Mabel Cheung and Alex Law who together have the reputation on romances – with previous works of “An Autumn’s Tale” and “Echoes of the Rainbow”. Set in Anhui province, Shanghai and Hong Kong, the movie centers around two couples (starring Sean Lau Ching-wan and Tang Wei), who struggle to survive China's turbulent '40s.
