Tips for Giving Baby Medicine

Weather during the fall seasons often changes rapidly from hot to cold, baby with weak immune system during these changing environment is very vulnerable to catch cold. Often at times when feeding medicine, many mothers will trouble and helpless. In fact, as long the concepts and techniques is used correctly, given medicines can also be very easy. The following fundamental tips are reference for parents at times when giving medicines to their babies.

 

 

 

 

 

1. Giving medicine to baby is most efficient at within 1 hour time before meal, since babies hunger appetite will help easily them swallow faster, and is not advice to give medicine after feeding because the bitter taste of the medicine can cause nausea and vomit. Many parents will think an empty stomach can hurt the baby, but in fact, most infant's medicine are very neutral, unless is recommended from the doctor, the best time for medicine is before mealtime.

 

2. Giving medicine should avoid when baby is lying, firstly bring baby into sitting position at a 45 degree angle, using appropriate medical utensils, squeeze out medicine droplets in the sublingual area and swallow.

 

3. If the medicine is too bitter, baby might resist feeding. At the time, parents can try changing the bitter taste with some sweets easing the feeding tension. Generally it is not  recommend adding medicine to milk since it might alter the taste of milk which in turn can cause future milk resistance issue. Older babies or toddlers can try medicine accompany with some pudding or jelly to soften the bitterness.

 

4. Given medicines available tools, such as: (spoon) one spoonful at a time (Dropper)putting the appropriate amount of medication into the container, and then draw some liquid into the dropper, the then drop into the baby's mouth.

 

5. Should pay special attention when feeding medicine, do not reach into deep parts of the mouth, because it is very easy to hurt the baby.

 

6. Within 30 minutes time period, if the baby is vomiting a lot after taking medicine, it is necessary to add 1 more dose. If the spits out are small amount, then do not have to add any dose.

 

7. Parents should remember not to deceive children, that medicine is "it's sweet good taste" sweet like candy treat, because after having the medication, they will realize the truth behind it and might not so easily believe what their parent's say in the future.

 

8. If the baby refuses to open their mouth to take medicine, parents should not force them, which can help avoid resist taking medicine in the future. Parents should be patient and explaining the reasons for medication, do not forget to hold them or give them a hug after medication,  a little encouraging or applause, for example might be give one of their favorite candy to eat all these can provide position relationship and education between parents and baby.

 

9. Keeping the surrounding environment quiet and peaceful which could help calm the baby down.

 

10. Finally parents should never in any way forcing baby to swallow medication which can cause vomiting, lung disease or suffocation.
